About harrison

Has looked rather one paced on a number of occasions, including last time out in a Listed contest at York. He was third in the King George V Handicap at Royal Ascot 2016 but the extra trip needs to bring out a large jolt of improvement for him to figure.

About endless time

Twice runner up in Group 1's last season, the Prix Vermeille and Prix Royal Oak, she returned to action in the Yorkshire Cup. She finished fourth in a blanket finish there and the step up is interesting us. Could be a player if her stamina holds.

About order of st george

Defending Champion after taking the prize back to Ballydoyle, the stable's 7th win in 11 years. Beaten three times at odds on since that win but given the trainer's phenomenal record in the race, still looks the one to beat.

About nearly caught

Dour stayer, he was third in the 2016 Prix du Cadran behind Quest For More and Vazirabad. He ran to a similar level at Ascot on Champions Day when behind Sheikhzayedroad which shows his limitations at this level.

About big orange

Popular front runner who wears his heart on his sleeve. He spent the majority of 2016 jet setting, running in Australia, Hong Kong, Dubai and the UK. He was two lengths behind Vazirabad most recently in Dubai, an unlikely winner but should give a bold sight.

About simple verse

2015 St Leger winner in a controversial finish with Bondi Beach. A winner over the same mile and three quarters at Doncaster in the Park Hill Stakes in 2016, she was a length adrift of Sheikhzayedroad in the Long Distance Cup. Smart return when placing second to Dartmouth in the Yorkshire Cup to start her 2017 campaign.

About trip to paris

2015 winner but his appetite for racing has looked dubious since, tailing himself off in the Dubai Gold Cup. He ran a little better in a conditions race at Nottingham last time but that form leaves him a long way short for Ascot.

About prince of arran

Yet to win on turf but set a career best on grass when runner up to Sweet Selection in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot in May. That blew his handicap mark so connections are forced to seek pattern company but he is yet to look up to anything like this level.

About quest for more

Beat Vazirabad by a short neck in the Prix du Cadran last October, his first attempt at this trip. Twice came off second best with Sheikhzayedroad over shorter in 2017. Arguably had his limitations exposed then but this trip may suit him better than that rival.

About harbour law

Created history in 2016, winning the St Leger for trainer Laura Mongan who became the first woman to train the winner of the Classic. Bitter disappointment when finishing last in the Sagaro Stakes at Ascot on his 2017 return. That leaves him with plenty of questions to answer.

About torcedor

A perfect 2/2 since joining Jessica Harrington even taking the scalp of Order Of St George last time out at Navan. That was over a 6f shorter trip than this test so it's unwise to take it too literally but he is progressing along the right lines.

About sheikhzayedroad

3rd in the race last year before landing the Doncaster Cup and the Long Distance Cup on Champions Day at Ascot. Better than ever last season as a 7 year old but behind Vazirabad in both runs this year. A chance of placing but an unlikely winner.

About she is no lady

Top end handicapper broke her Listed duck last October at Saint Cloud. She stays well but her form so far leaves her with a lot to find with the majority of these.

About sweet selection

Improved out of all recognition last season, culminating with a three length victory in the Cesarewitch at Newmarket. She picked up where she left off in 2017, landing the Group 3 Sagaro Stakes at Ascot. This demands another leap forward but she's a gritty, dour stayer and that's far from impossible.

About The Piece

It’s all well and good backing a horse based on their form, but some horses have winning running through their veins.

With Royal Ascot approaching, Ascot Ancestry takes a different approach to scouting out the favourites, exploring each contender’s bloodlines and uncovering the major winners behind them.

Taking into account all major race wins, Ascot Ancestry analyses four previous generations of the Ascot Gold Cup starting field and ranks which is most likely to win based on the number of major race winners in the family tree.
