When you work for a respected organisation like MyRacing.com doors can open and I was lucky enough to be invited by the Singapore Turf Club to attend their International meeting this Sunday coming, where they put on two Group Ones which have once again attracted some high class horses from around the World.

To be fair, cards on the table, as most people know by now I am a bit of a Champion for International racing – I don’t think it is any better than ours overall, but nor do I think it is any worse, but I do feel we are a little too insular in the United Kingdom to the extent that here we have two Group One races, worth over £1.9 million in prize money, yet there isn’t even a racecard as yet on the Racing Post website – go figure?

Anyway, rant over, and I arrived to be put up in a nice hotel in the centre of town before heading off to what they call the Post Position Draw – basically a mini party where the stall numbers are allocated to the relevant horses and we all get to have a chat in pretty informal surroundings (it works). After meeting and greeting various owners and trainers from all around the World (Freddy Head from France, Fawzi Abdulla Nass from Bahrain, John Moore from Hong Kong, and so on), we wandered back to our rooms for some work before getting up the next day at 3.30am to watch the horses work – not all fun as you can see and not such a great idea after a few drinks!

With all the horses working on the track over here (ditto Hong Kong), the local journalists seem to know what they are looking for (I haven’t a clue, its all alien to me), and reported back that SIA Cup second favourite Dan Excel looked bigger and stronger than they had ever seen him. Trained in Hong Kong by John Moore he own the race last year so we know he likes track and trip and after listening in to a conversation on the bus back to my hotel, I can pass on that they think he is stronger than ever and that they will have him at his absolute peak by race time. Personally, that is good enough for me and he will be carrying my cash here, but what about the sprint I hear you ask?

Truth is, I have heard nothing of any benefit, and with sprinters anything can happen, but the betting suggests it is all about Aerovelocity. He won a very valuable grade One in Japan at Chukyo when last seen and also won the Hong Kong Sprint (Group One) in December last year in a better looking race and it will be quite a shock if he is beaten her on Sunday night, with his likely front running style the main potential issue with plenty of other trail blazers in the field.
