Pontefract Betting Tips

Pontefract Racecourse is a flat track based in West Yorkshire. Pontefract holds meetings in the summer and hosts a number of listed races, including their seasonal highlight the Pontefract Castle Stakes, in which the classy Brown Panther was the best horse to win in recent times. It’s a popular course with northern racing fans and the design of the track produces many course specialists.

Pontefract Betting Tips

The undulating course at Pontefract is certainly one of the biggest tests in terms of stamina for UK based flat horses in staying races. The left-handed track is a stiff 2 miles in distance, with sharp gradients and a gruelling uphill 3 furlong finish. Front runners are suited in the sprints, where being on the inside is a big advantage unless the ground is on the heavier side. This sees a lot of jockeys opting to race wide for the better ground. Course specialists are often the order of the day; a factor which is of major importance when selecting our Pontefract tips.

Pontefract Draw Bias

There isn’t much advantage to the draw for races over 5 furlongs and 6 furlongs at Pontefract races. However, over a mile there does seem to be a slight bias for horses drawn low and in particular for those drawn low in large fields. When the going is soft that advantage does seem to be increased, however.

Pontefract Betting Trends

Luca Cumani and Charlie Appleby both have excellent strike rates (44.44% and 33.33% respectively) at Pontefract races in the last 3 seasons. However, it’s northern trainer Richard Fahey who appeals the most. With an impressive 22.64% win rate from his 159 runners, he’s also scooped £189,543 in prize money. That’s £40,000 more than Mark Johnston in second and well over £100,000 more than the rest.

William Buick and Paul Hanagan both get honourable mentions for jockeys to follow at Pontefract, as does Tony Hamilton, mainly due to his partnership with Richard Fahey. In terms of winnings and volume of winners-to-rides, it’s Silvestre de Sousa who comes out on top, with a 20.17% win rate and £188,985 earned in prizes.
