Hereford Racecourse is a National Hunt course based in Herefordshire. The earliest recorded race at the track took place in August 1771. Hereford races ceased all National Hunt racing at the track in December 2012 following Arena Racing Company’s failed bid for a new lease. However, the course was reopened for National Hunt racing in October 2016, with fixtures planned for the remainder of the year and 2017. The reopening of this popular track has been welcomed by the racing community and, in particular, local trainers from the West Country.
Hereford Betting Tips
Hereford racecourse is a right-handed National Hunt racing track, measuring 1 mile 4 furlongs in circumference. There are nine fences to negotiate on the chase course and six flights to take on the hurdles course. The almost square course is forgiving in terms of undulations. But with sharp turns and fences on half turns, it can prove a tricky test for the inexperienced horse or jockey. The shape of the track means that horses are constantly turning – a factor we consider when selecting our Hereford betting tips. Therefore, we often single out well-balanced types that prefer to be up with the pace. It’s essential to be travelling well before the home turn. This is due to the downward gradient on the run in to the home straight.
Hereford is also a track close to the hearts of leading jumps trainer Paul Nicholls and champion jockey Richard Johnson. Nicholls saddled his first ever winner at Hereford with Olveston back in 1991. Johnson also gained his first career win in a Hunter’s Chase aboard Rusty Bridge on 30 April 1994.
Hereford Betting Trends
Recent stats can be a little misleading due to the closure of the track. That said, it is worth noting that the Twiston-Davies family have a good record at the course. Paul Nicholls’s stable jockey Sam Twiston-Davies has the best strike rate of the last five years, riding five winners from his 11 mounts. His father, Nigel, also boasts impressive strike rates as both a trainer and owner, with 33% and 50% respectively.
