Fontwell Racecourse is situated in Sussex, close to Goodwood. The track is always popular, especially on their Saturday and Sunday meetings. However, it still maintains that quintessential country track feel. A visit to Fontwell racecourse would not be complete without a walk into the middle of the track to see the chasers take the fences on the downhill run. This provides a chance to get up close and personal with the equine stars on show.
Fontwell Betting Tips
Fontwell is unique in that it has a mile oval course round the outside that forms the hurdles track. It then has a mile figure of eight course in the middle where the chases are run. The back straight runs downhill and can regularly find out those horses struggling to lay up with the pace. The home straight is back uphill again and can punish those who have kicked on too soon.
The going gets very testing in the winter months, with the January fixtures regularly lost to the weather. The bottom bend suffers the worst of the waterlogging and plans are in action to make it an all-weather bend (similar to that away from the stands at Musselburgh). This will hopefully see fewer meetings abandoned.
The chase fences are a fair test for a horse. The first one down the back comes up quickly off the bend and the second is taken downhill. The open ditch three from home comes up swiftly off the home turn. This presents another jumping test, with bends both left and right favouring a smaller well-balanced type than a large galloping horse. It can also help those who have looked a little quirky as the ever-changing nature of the track keeps them interested and generates a number of course specialists.
Fontwell Betting Trends
Gary Moore is, unsurprisingly, the winning most trainer at the Fontwell racecourse with his few runners in bumpers showing a profit. Giles Bravery is primarily a flat yard and has sent just the two runners to Fontwell in the last five years. However, both have sprung surprises at 20/1 and 33/1 in bumpers which is worth bearing in mind in the future.
