Epsom Downs Racecourse is a Grade 1 track located in Epsom, Surrey in England. It can hold up to 120,000 people on any one day and the main spectacle is the Epsom Derby, one of the world’s most prestigious flat races. In operation since 1661, this is a unique course that won’t suit a lot of horses due to the undulations and sweeping left hand bends.
Epsom Betting Tips
Epsom racecourse is a U-shaped, undulating left-handed course. The prominent racers have a big advantage here due to the sharp bends, camber and severe downhill gradients. The 5 furlong track is the fastest sprint course in the world since it is predominantly downhill the entire way. When the ground is soft or heavy, horses will tend to race by the stands side rail in order to look for better ground. Only very balanced horses will succeed at Epsom and they need to be a thorough stayer to get home over middle distances.
Epsom Draw Bias
There aren’t too many 5 furlong sprints at Epsom, but in large fields over the minimum, it slightly favours those drawn high. Over 6 furlongs, again, there is a slight advantage to be drawn high. Over 7 furlongs, it is an advantage to be drawn low. However, the two outside stalls also do very well, possibly because they can venture toward the stands side rail for better ground. There is no bias over a mile.
Epsom Betting Trends
Over the past three seasons, surprisingly, it is Mick Channon that comes out on top from the trainers. He has saddled 11 winners from his last 47 runners (23%). John Gosden also does extremely well with his runners at Epsom races and is operating at a 30% strike rate. George Baker has a 26% strike rate with 8 winners from his last 31 runners, producing a level stakes profit of +£40.75.
Silvestre De Sousa is by far the top jockey at Epsom over the past three seasons, riding 21 winners from 79 rides (27% strike rate). Charles Bishop has an incredible record at Epsom with 8 winners from his past 15 rides at the track, an incredible 53% strike rate, producing a level stakes profit of +£42.25. Frankie Dettori is well worth following for the top class races. He has amassed £903,330 in prize money here in the past three years.
