Chester Racecourse is the oldest course still in use in the UK and is also referred to as “The Roodee”. It is situated not too far from Liverpool and Manchester airports. The racecourse is located in the middle of Chester, within walking distance to shops, restaurants and nightlife. Chester’s May Meeting is one of the highlights on the flat racing calendar and the feature race is The Chester Cup.
Chester Betting Tips
Chester racecourse is the smallest racecourse in England, measuring just 11 furlongs in circumference. The track is an extremely sharp, left-handed circular circuit and is unique in that horses are running on the turn throughout much of the race. This makes it a huge advantage to be in a prominent position on the inside so that a lot of ground can be saved on the bends. The final bend leads into a short home straight.
Chester Draw Bias
Drawing low is a huge advantage at Chester and it is probably the largest bias in the country. A horse that likes to race prominently that has a good inside draw has every chance to succeed. Amazingly, over the past five years in 5 furlong handicaps with eleven runners or more, no horse has won from the top half of the draw. But the downside to the draw bias at Chester is that this is always reflected in prices, so finding value can be extremely difficult. For trips between 6 furlongs and a mile the draw is much fairer.
Chester Betting Trends
The owner most synonymous with Chester racecourse has to be Dr Marwan Koukash. All the trainers he uses have instructions to send his horses to Chester when races are available. However, because of this his runners have a low strike rate and even lower returns. He has just a 9% strike rate and a -£162.88 level stakes profit (to £1 stakes) over the last 5 seasons from 408 runners.
The trainer without doubt to follow at Chester races is Andrew Balding who boasts a 24% win strike rate at the course, with 24 winners from his last 101 runners. This has also resulted in a profit of +£27.21 to £1 level stakes. This roughly equates to a 27% yield on your investment.
Richard Kingscote is a very successful jockey on the Roodee, with 32 winners from his past 154 rides (21% win strike rate). Ryan Moore also has a very impressive 31% strike rate over the past three seasons at Chester, although he doesn’t have a huge amount of rides.
