Guide To Saturday’s Racing – 18th August 2018

Newbury Racecourse

We’ve made it to Saturday once again, which means we’re in for another bumper day of racing! Across the UK & Ireland we have a grand total of eight meetings, so there is plenty of action to sink our teeth into! ITV4 plays host to seven races, the feature of those being the Hungerford Stakes, a Group 2 over the specialist seven-furlong distance at Newbury. You can find all our ITV Racing Tips on site now, as we look ahead to another exciting day of thrills!

O’Brien hungry for British success at Newbury

Would you believe us if we told you that Aidan O’Brien, the master of Ballydoyle, has had just thirteen winners from 142 total runners in the UK this year? The curious case of his British runners continues on Saturday as Gustav Klimt looks to restore some parity in the Group 2 Hungerford Stakes. Exceptionally well backed overnight, O’Brien will be praying that a drop from the mile can serve as a platform for success. It certainly won’t be an easy task, however, with the improving Yafta the lively challengers.

Growl on the prowl in the Great St Wilfrid

It’s been fourteen starts f0r Growl since he last tasted glory, winning the Listed Wentworth Stakes at Doncaster in November 2016. That day he defeated both Aeolus and Kimberella, who reoppose him today, which is certainly an interesting dynamic. Richard Fahey has won this race twice since 2013, so there is plenty of hope that the likeable six-year-old can run another big race for Marwan Koukash.

Stats Of The Day

  • If you backed all of Aidan O’Brien’s runners in the UK this season, you’d have made an alarming loss of £79.77 to level stakes.
  • Godolphin leads the way at Newbury this season in terms of winners, with a 29% strike-rate from fourteen runners. They run Good Fortune (1.50), Walton Street (2.25) and Hamada (2.25) at the Berkshire venue today.
