6.00pm – 15 Euro Admission Rated Chase (2m 2f)

Free Tip: French Opera at 7/1 EW with Bet365

The 15 Admission Rated Chase is a fantastic start to a great Punchestown card with some really solid chasers lining up. Bookmakers have installed Real Steel as the market favourite having outpointed Foildubh on his latest start by half a length. That run suggested today’s extra two furlongs would be well in his favour but he has never won at the two mile and two furlong trip. He was won over two miles and three but his current form would suggest two miles is his best trip. Foildubh was giving Real Steal 5lbs that day as a result of Danny Mullins’ claim and I don’t agree that there should be a 7 point price difference between the two. Idevan who is joint favourite with Real Steel is favourite in places returns off a lengthy 199 day break when last seen finishing second to Shanahan’s Turn. He’s let the form down since but Idevan had rattled up a quick hat-trick before that run and has an extremely progressive profile over fences. Gold Bullet, a beautiful grey horse is one I’ve always had a soft spot for but he really let down backers when pulled up over the two mile distance last time out. He didn’t show what he can do that day and I’m prepared to give him another chance today albeit up against it in classier company. I would have been keen to give Darwin’s Fox a favourable mention but his form has since been let down by Surf and Turf since finishing well beaten at Stratford. The one I’m going to be backing in a really fiercely competitive race is French Opera EW at a current best price of 7/1. He put in a fantastic run at Cheltenham to finish a neck behind Anay Turge and having raced off a high mark in some really strong contests, I fancy him to go close in a really difficult race with Robbie Power on board. Indevan is feared most.

6.30pm – Follow Punchestown On Facebook Chase (2m 6f)

Free Tip: Argocat at 7/4 with Bet365 (Best Bet)

The Follow Punchestown On Facebook Chase is a smaller but equally as compelling puzzle as the first race on the Punchestown card. Argocat heads the market as a best-priced 15/8 poke. He’s found it hard to get his head in front having not won since February 2014 but that is perhaps unfair on Tom Taaffe’s classy chaser as he’s been battling it out behind the likes of Felix Younger. It was disappointing not to see him finish closer in the Oaksey Chase to the likes of Al Ferof and Third Intention but his form with Felix Younger is very strong. Close behind in the market is Baily Green who has sprung into some sensational form of late. He put in a great front-running display in April when just losing out to Gold Bullet. He followed that up with an even better run when finishing just ½ lengths behind Felix Younger here at Punchestown over two miles. It was really disappointing when he was beaten a fair way by Letter Of Credit off level weights when he technically had 23lbs in hand, but we can perhaps forgive that run given it came just 12 days after chasing home Felix Younger. Rathlin is another horse who has struggled to get his head in front having failed to win since notching up a fantastic treble in the summer of 2013. His third in the Topham Chase was very respectable but he couldn’t capitalise at Punchestown to follow up and 4/1 looks slightly skinny in this contest. Make A Track needs to step up again after his good win last time out. He’s been facing weaker opposition than this and so he’ll really need to improve to get the better of some of these off level weights. I would love to be backing Baily Green to get the better of Argocat but he has to concede 6lbs to him and the two Gigginstown runners. Therefore I’ll take Argocat to get the better of an out of form Rathlin and Make A Track who has to prove he can step up to this level.

7.00pm – Punchestown For Events Handicap Chase (2m 6f)

Free Tip: Jansboy at 10/1 EW with Bet365 (Best EW Bet)

As De Pique won a weak handicap chase just a few days ago with only three of the eight runners with marks of 100 or greater. Today’s chase sees seven runners rated well above 100 on official ratings and As De Pique is well off at the weights with his rider again claiming 7lbs. That leaves him to race off a mark more akin to the flat – 9st 13lbs. However, I want to take him on by backing Pat Garrett. The one I like at a price is Jansboy at 10/1 with the Bet365. He’s down a further 2lbs for finishing third behind Horrendous Hulabaloo who boosted the form yesterday when winning again. He gets a 5lb claimer aboard again today which leaves him just 1lb higher than his highest ever winning rating albeit over hurdles a long while ago.

7.30pm – Festival Dreams Begin In Ireland With Thoroughbred Marketing Maiden Hurdle (2m 4f)

Free Tip: Sandymount Duke at 9/4 with Bet365

The Festival Dreams Begin In Ireland Maiden Hurdle is a wide open contest and I don’t fancy De Name Escapes Me. He’s a point to pointer and having sprung a big surprise when landing a flat race over two miles at a juicy price of 20/1. He probably won’t relish the good ground as much as he did the yielding to soft so I’ll take a chance on Sandymount Duke for top connections Mrs. Jessica Harrington with Robbie Power in the plate. He kept on well when finishing 2nd of 23 here at Punchestown a few weeks ago and with the extra four furlongs and ground likely to suit, I’ll take him at 9/4 to overturn the jolly. Pack The Punch, one of only three to hold handicap marks in this field is certainly not without a chance off a mark of 116 and is feared at a nice EW price of 10/1.

8.00pm – Panoramic Restaurant Mares Maiden Hurdle (2m)

Free Tip: Our Girl Naoise at 7/1 EW

Sophie’s World is the piping hot favourite for the Panoramic Restaurant mares Maiden Hurdle and can only be backed at 1/2 with some firms going as short as 2/5. She was well beaten by a very well regarded Mullins/Walsh hotpot on her second start over hurdles. She was beaten 7 ½ lengths that day but beat another horse by 16 lengths who has since placed off 102 which perhaps identifies the level of the form. She’s a classy performer on the flat having won over a mile at Galway off 82 and has been rated as high as 91. She’ll need to prove she can jump the hurdles as well as she did on her last start but if she stays on her feet she has to be winning this to avoid becoming disappointing. The market has Our Girl Naoise well positioned as 7/1 second favourite and she would be the most likely one to capitalise should Sophie’s World fail to win receiving stacks of weight from the field.

8.30pm – Punchestown Handicap Hurdle (2m)

Free Tip: Mrs Mac Veale at 12/1 EW with Bet365

This handicap hurdle features another Irish horse I’m really fond of – Lean and Keen. Having been a victorious handicapper on the flat, Lean and Keen made the step up winning two of his three attempts over hurdles. He was well beaten in a much tougher class one contest when last seen facing a hurdle but he’s since won on the flat and reverts back to the obstacles today. He’ll have to prove he can give weight all-round so I am rather reluctantly taking him on with Mrs Mac Veale. A well campaigned mare over hurdles, she knows the score and what it takes to win a race of this nature. She’s not won since winning off 118 at Wexford and may find the ground slightly against her today but with a 5lb claimer on board she has a nice mark and a price of 12/1 gives her an EW shout in a really open contest.

9.00pm – Punchestown.com INH Flat Race (2m)

Free Tip: Touch A Million at 3/1 with Bet365

A flat race there for the taking, Gordon Elliott looks to have found a great opportunity for Touch A Million to notch up a first victory on the racecourse. He was sold for a whopping 130,000 Euros for a yearling but something clearly went amiss when selling for 3,500 guineas as a three year-old. That would unnerve me at 3/1 but two years has passed since then and with Gordon Elliott, he couldn’t be in any safer hands. Nina Carberry is booked. Matchaway is feared most being a half-brother to a four times winning chaser over two miles four and further. He may find this trip on the short side today so Touch A Million is preferred.
