With a little expertise and a smidgen of luck, it is possible to win pretty big on your horse racing accumulator.
Sometimes, with a little expertise and a lot of luck, it’s possible to win ‘very’ big. Here are some of the biggest horse racing accumulator wins ever:
Heating engineer Steve Whiteley became an ex-heating engineer when he picked six winners with a £2 stake during the Tote Jackpot – the biggest in the competition’s history.
The sixth horse that came in was Lupita, a 12-1 shot ridden by a novice that hadn’t won in 26 races. It’s fair to say that the stars aligned for Mr Whitely that day.
With an accumulator that featured the horses Isn’t That Lucky and A Dream Come True, in 2008 a 60-year old small-time gambler became the world’s first ‘betting shop millionaire’. What’s more, the lucky punter didn’t realise he’d won until he visited the shop to place more bets a few days later.
The fortuitous man bet at odds of nearly 2.8 million, but because the bookie William Hill has a maximum horse racing payout, he had to forgo £400k settle for a round 1 million. We doubt he was too heartbroken.
There weren’t many people happier than Frankie Dettori when he famously won all seven races at Ascot in 1996.
However one punter was even chirpier than Frankie: Darren Yeats from Morecambe bet £59 on the unlikely occurrence to take home a very cool £550,000.
Showing that seven really is a lucky number, back in May 2011 one unnamed online punter bet 50p at frankly ridiculous odds of 706,128 to 1.
With just a 2p stake, an anonymous father of two landed a huge accumulator to bring home winnings of more than £111,000.
This mega-odds win came during a good day for the unnamed luckster. In total, he put on a series of 1p bets on 11 different selections that totalled £15.84. In total, he won £209,731.59. Nice.
