5 Outsiders To Watch This Weekend

There are always a few big priced diamonds in the rough during the weekend meetings and our experts have picked out a fantastic five to watch over this weekend’s action. The Lockinge meeting takes place at Newbury but there other plenty of other tracks to keep an eye on and we’ve chosen a few big priced chances who could make you rich.

Lightning Spear – 3.40pm Newbury – 22/1

This David Simcock-trained horse will be ridden by Oisin Murphy for Qatar Racing and looks to have a decent chance of at least picking up some place money in what doesn’t look a vintage renewal of the Group 1 Lockinge. He is rated 115 which is just four pounds lower than the highest rated horse in the race and he has plenty of top class form including two Group 2 wins and four Group 1 places. He hasn’t been at the top of his game in his last three starts but was running well against the likes of Ribchester last year and probably faces nothing of that quality here so can be given a good chance of running well especially at attractive odds.

Roland Rocks – 3.15pm Newmarket – 25/1

Was stepped up to ten furlongs last time out when finishing last but that looked plenty far enough and the big drop back to six furlongs looks a big plus. His best recent performance came in January at Meydan when second to a very promising type over seven furlongs and this sharper trip looks sure to suit for this speedy colt. He has dropped all the way down to a mark of 88 which seems more than feasible especially when looking at his respectable seventh place finish behind Cardsharp in the Group 2 July Stakes at this track last season, he can go very well here.

Oh So Sassy – 5.35pm Newmarket – 6/1

Not quite an outsider, but still worth a mention. Finished tenth of sixteen at Doncaster last month but looked like a horse who would definitely need the run so can be forgiven that and the run wasn’t completely devoid of promise in any case. She has always enjoyed a quicker surface which she gets here and she is six pounds lower than when last winning a Class 4 handicap at Doncaster. She is beginning to look very nicely handicapped and this looks a winnable race, the booking of William Buick catches the eye for a yard he rarely rides for and she must have a decent chance.

Tylery Wonder – 3.20pm Thirsk – 25/1

Has finished well down the field in his three starts this season but has looked as if not fully fit in each of those efforts and he could just be coming to the boil at the right time here. He is three pounds below his last winning mark which only came in September last year and also came after a change of headgear which he gets here with blinkers replacing a visor. He has no troubles on quick ground as he won a decent handicap at York by a comfortable four lengths on good ground last year and he looks weighted to have a say in this.

Big Storm Coming – 3.55pm Thirsk – 14/1

Switched stables from David Brown to the canny John Quinn recently and although he was slightly underwhelming when ninth of fifteen that can be forgiven as horses often need time to settle in to new surroundings and he could start to come into his own now. He was drawn poorly that day as well but has been dropped two pounds and also has the help of Phil Dennis’ three pound claim here so is effectively five pounds lower here. He has won at this track before and his yard is flying with seven winners from their last twenty-two runners so he has a big shout.
