For all he may need the handicapper to ease off, Krackatoa King needs considering in a race like this, while Spookydooky, who has some pleasing form in the Devon National to his name, is another who merits plenty of respect. However, it is ROYAL PALLADIUM who gets the nod. Venetia Williams’ gelding has already shown good form at this course and won’t need to do too much more than when finishing third here recently. At the prices, the ten-year-old is worth siding with.

Knockanrawley silk
J: Mikey Hamill T: Kim Bailey
Two wins and seven places from 15 runs over fences, the ten-year-old is no stranger to running a good race over the larger obstacles. Ran well on seasonal reappearance, though the gelding has since disappointed. Needs to do more after finishing a remote fifth at Sandown last time out.

J: Jamie Moore T: Kerry Lee
Winner at Uttoxeter back in November 2017, Kerry Lee’s entrant has since struggled to cope with a rise in the weights. Failed to land a blow at Uttoxeter last time, though that was the Midlands National, a race which demands more than this contest is likely to. Could do better but remains 3lbs above last winning mark and may need handicapper to relent before winning again.
Wizards Bridge silk
Wizards Bridge
J: Harry Cobden T: Colin Tizzard
In-form contender, who comes here having won each of his last two races, as well as three of his last six. Continued to be ahead of the handicapper when winning at Fontwell last time out and a further 2lb rise seems somewhat lenient. Will need more in this company but the nine-year-old is clearly thriving at present and yet have more to offer.
Royal Palladium silk
Royal Palladium
J: Charlie Deutsch T: Venetia Williams
Four times a winner over fences, Venetia Williams’ representative has a good record at this venue having won and placed in three runs at Exeter. Didn’t perform as expected last time out, though turned in a very encouraging performance here prior to that. The return to this venue, the addition of headgear and the step up in trip could see the gelding deliver another pleasing run.
Ballyheigue Bay silk
Ballyheigue Bay
J: Tom Cannon T: Chris Gordon
The eleven-year-old comes here in good form having failed to finish outside of the top three in any of last four races, though such form has not gone unnoticed by the handicapper, who took a dim view of his recent win at Ascot. Now 3lb above last winning mark and may just have been halted for the time being.
Spookydooky silk
J: Richard Johnson T: Jonjo O'Neill
Ran well to finish third in last season’s Devon National at this venue, form that is more than useful. Hasn’t been seen to best effect since then, though his handicap mark has fallen as a result. Needs to step up on recent efforts but a return to the level of form which saw him go well in the aforementioned big race would give him a solid chance.
Yanmare silk
J: Jamie Bargary T: Nigel Twiston-Davies
Was in fine form last season, winning no less than three times over the larger obstacles, though it’s been a different story for the eight-year-old this season. Won over C&D in December but has since failed to get competitive at both Warwick and at this venue. Remains above last winning mark and could struggle to go close in this line-up.
